closing down everything must go

My rapidshare account comes to an end in a few days time and I shan’t be renewing it because, along with most people it seems, I’ve found it increasingly frustrating and unworkable in numerous ways. What this means for you is the contents of the Downloads page, and links in other posts, are likely to disappear gradually. If they were an easy way to mirror the lot of them in one go I’d do it, but frankly I haven’t the time or patience. Mind you I’m sure you’ll be able to find most over at the John Peel Wiki perhaps or on one of the various sites listed in the margin.

Oh, john peel everyday is still up and running of course.

In all I don’t think it’s that big a deal. The lack of updates is due to poor health, as usual – yawn, but things on a less ambitious scale will appear at T.B.C. What with letting the domain slip, it’s probably best to wrap things up now.

We had a few laughs though didn’t we?

Caio. (“;)

Andy Kershaw on BBC Radio 4

Andy Kershaw

Andy Kershaw talks about rebuilding his life and career.

Here’s an early notication that’s sure to be of interest to a great many that frequent this site.

On the Ropes
09:00-09:30 (repeated at 21:30-22:00)
Tuesday 28th April 2009
BBC Radio 4

John Humphrys talks to successful people who have weathered storms in their careers.

Andy Kershaw talks about rebuilding his life and career after losing his BBC radio show and spending time in prison for breaking a restraining order.

Andy has enjoyed a highly successful broadcasting career, winning a brace of Sony Radio awards and receiving critical acclaim for his reports from Rwanda, Angola, Haiti and Iraq. However, his outspoken opinions led to him being dropped by Radio One; he openly attacked Bob Geldof over his stance on Africa and in 2007 his personal life began to suffer.

He was arrested trying to break into the home of his former girlfriend and was found guilty of drink driving. A restraining order was placed on Andy, and his Radio 3 show was taken off air. In 2008 he breached this restraining order in an attempt to see his two children and ended up in jail. He is attempting to rebuild his life and career.

BBC iPlayer Technical Support

BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer

I foresee ongoing problems with iPlayer that will certainly delay future uploads. I’ve taken heed and bookmarked technical support.

However they were great at fixing the problem last week by re-editing the programme in question. Moreover they achieved this very quickly indeed. Easily within the space of 5 hours. So, technical issues with the software aside, I wish to give the BBC iPlayer Support and 6 Music Website Team a huge thank you. Respect ;)

I may occasionally moan about the Beeb but that’s all to do with upper management, not the people who do the real grafting.

You’ll Never Be Sixteen Again (Complete Series)

You'll Never Be Sixteen Again

You'll Never Be Sixteen Again

“A rare chance to hear this acclaimed series, presented by John Peel and first broadcast in 1985, which tells the story of the British teenager through music, archive and reminiscences.”

It’s time once again to man the editing block (ask your parents!), as “6 Music Plays It Again” but in bite-sized chunks of course. One ought not to complain though, because it’s good to know someone has the good sense to embark upon regular raids within the BBC archives.

Each of the original one hour episodes was split in two and broadcast over consecutive nights which necessitated a degree of creative editing that I only really embarked upon with any degree of flair from episode 3.

I might re-edit 1 and 2 if only to provide consistency, although I don’t think it will bother anyone too much, other than myself if, as I suspect, It becomes yet another of those empty ‘promises’ that you’ve doubtless come to expect from me.

Although fostering low expectations for this site must make anything a welcome bonus I imagine. Perhaps somewhat like the denial of a wife-beater’s prey whose loyalty rests on the claim that, “He’s actually quite a softie really”.

NOTICE: I foolishly named rar files, 1 & 2, the wrong way around. However the links are correct and so are the actual audio files within!

“A look at austerity, fashion, Elvis Presley, rock ‘n’ roll and attitudes towards sex.”

The Big O (updated)

Shades and a mean guitar...genius.

Shades and a mean guitar...genius.

I must admit, I’d never heard about this documentary, but I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to hear it.  And John  was always good at the documentary thing.

At midnight on 29  and 30 January, BBC6 is broadcasting a two-part documentary about Roy Orbison, narrated by Peel, who was always a great fan, and in fact chose It’s Over as one of his Desert Island Discs. Where I live (South Korea), I’ll be able to make morning coffee and toast for myself and my wife while listening, as opposed to staggering back bleary-eyed from the pub and then finding you missed it.

I particularly like a story JP wrote for the Times in 1994 when he described seeing him live just before he died: one wobbly start (with Running Scared, I think), then the voice of a god came through. Sheila believes he would have nominated the Ipswich gig as one of his best ever.

P.S.
I’m sending out invites so that others can contribute news and links to their own Peel site updates. Just because I want to take a back seat shouldn’t allow the site to go unloved. If you’ve got a reason to be invited just ask.

DJ Jarvis

For those without a Peel gig to go to over the weekend, why not give BBC 6 Music a try?

Not a phrase I’d normally utter, but this weekend sitting in for Stephen Merchant is our old pal Jarvis Cocker. He’s on from 15:30 to 17:30, Sunday 26th October. Subsequent weeks will feature The Kaiser Chiefs and Cerys Matthews, thus offering further proof to support the ‘law of diminishing returns’.

*Hey there fellow UK residents, don’t forget the clocks went back one hour last night.

Two recent radio documentaries featuring Jarvis Cocker.

• Zine Scene (in two parts)

Broadcast in January 2008 on BBC Radio 4
Zine Scene rapidshare

• Jarvis Cocker’s Musical Map of Sheffield.
“Former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker takes you on an intimate tour of Sheffield. In his evocative musical map, Jarvis creates a soundtrack that drives his memories, feelings and observations about his home town. Growing up in a city that was still reeling from the loss of big industry, Jarvis recalls his childhood, surrounded by family, and listening to conversations about love and disappointment. Along the way, he introduces the music of Sheffield legends, including Joe Cocker, Cabaret Voltaire, The Human League and Artery.”

Broadcast in July 2008 on BBC Radio 2

I haven’t checked that these might already be uploaded elsewhere, so I apologise in advance for any possible duplication.
