I’ve only just got around to watching the first episode of Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle and it’s extremely rare these days I can empathise wholeheartedly with anything delivered via a sanctimonious mainstream media, but this was a wonderful exception.

For those that feel the merest hint of an insightful or intellectual thought made in public these days is likely to invoke a scene reminiscent of the threatening mob from Don Siegel’s 1956 classic allegory, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, switch your television to BBC2 at 10 O’clock on Mondays.

But that’s not all! Upon visiting Mr. Lee’s website I found a John Peel Show file for download. “16 October 1996 – Richard Herring and Stewart Lee appear on the John Peel show, a teenage dream”. You’ll find it in the archives section. I’ve not listened to it yet so I can’t advise on how it compares with the version/s already circulating. What do you want, ‘The moon on a stick’? Actually while we’re on the subject, if you liked this series then seek out the two DVDs of him performing live. His comedy works even better in longer form.

Well it’s Tom Hark by Elias & His Zig Zag Jive Flutes, from that ‘golden year’ 1958. It appears onJohn Peel and Sheila, The Pig’s Big 78′s – A Beginner’s Guide, and is available from Trikont Records, Klang, their UK distributor, or any one of these fine indie retailers. Also, via YouTube, the ’58 original, plus Brighton band The Piranhas’ 1980 vocal version on Top of the Pops.

Now then, here’s a cute little curio featuring our John. It’s a rip from a promotional CD that was produced for people interested in a career in radio. I know!

Don’t be put-off though because it is in fact a well produced affair. Peelie hosts the one hour documentary featuring numerous industry professionals and it is interesting enough in itself even if you have no plans for a life on the waves. Now there’s a pun worthy of local radio. You can have that one on me!

Siezed by an almost overwhelming and unexpected urge to live (at least when I started the draft), it’s a new posting!

The Peel Tapes continue unabaited with Jon Horne‘s 1980 retrospective including the Festive Fifty and the Independent Labels Special from April of that year.

Local (to me anyway) lad Jamie continues his knack for uncovering new hidden gems and dispensing old Peel sessions despite now having to live in the Real World where care-free memories of student days are now just a haze. From July 2003 comes a Peel sesh by The French, whose only song I know is the one that got into the Festive Fifty, and Do Make Say Think from 2000

Indie MP3 is always worth visiting and now has it’s own “indie mp3 rapidshare archive”, which currently contains the complete Festive Fifty from 1986.

The Ted Chippington Revival at Frankosonic
I also want to happily jump on the Ted Chippington publicity bandwagon. It seems the laconic comic – again from the 80′s – is appearing in public again with hopes for a new box set of his complete recordings. I can’t recall where I first saw him. Maybe on Channel 4′s The Tube or it could have been any one of a number of New Variety/Alternative Comedy events of it’s day, but suffice to say that I’ve never forgotton him and it’s good to hear his name being mention again. If you like dry northern humour consider a move to Lancashire or on the other hand visit Frankosonic and lsiten to some audio examples beacuse my description doesn’t do him justice. Welcome back Ted.

And finally…
Things have been quite here for about a month or more but regulars no doubt know this is to be expected due to health (no sympathy please – just stating facts), and, well because the internet is like that isn’t it? That’s what makes it so darn fun. I’ve also been spending a little time and a lot of money building up a studio to record my own musical ideas. Big Up to Turnkey; F.O.A.D. to Studiospares (useless cunts)! Rest assured though that any lulls will generally be followed by peaks of activity.

More torrents are planned – I still haven’t ruled out the possibility of getting something completed before Christmas. And Eddie (not Eric), may even get his disc soon too!

I’ve a feeling I’ve forgotten one or two things I wanted to mention but if I remember they’ll go in the comments. I tire so easily these days – that do ya for now?

John Peel Night Lineup & CD Announced

The Raconteurs, The Horrors and Squarepusher have been confirmed as the acts for the forthcoming Radio 1 Peel Night. The event, which perhaps rather predictably has already sold out, forms part of the BBC’s Electric Proms at The Roundhouse in Camden, north London on October 26th.

As you are probably already aware, the gig will be preceded by a the release of the compilation John Peel – Right Time, Wrong Speed: 1977-1987 on October 9th (I wonder if Jon Horne gets a credit for the title?). It’s a double CD featuring numerous Peel favourites – see below…

Artwork will come from Peter Blake, the man resposible the classic cover of Sgt Pepper by The Beatles of course.

Other acts already announced include James Brown, The Who and Damon Albarn’s new band The Good, The Bad And The Queen.
