Seasonal Radio Highlights

Seasonal Radio Highlights
I’ve gone through the Christmas edition of the Radio Times on your behalf to see what’s on and found a handful of decent and so-so audio treats. I shall do the same with the telly guide if there’s owt much on. Let me know if you spot something I’ve missed won’t you?

Saturday 15 December 2007

Pop in Translation
BBC Radio 4 10:30-11:00
“During the 1960s many pop artists, from the Beatles to David Bowie, attempted to boost their success with foreign-language versions of their hits. Mark Radcliffe looks at one of pop music’s quirkier episodes.”

Monday 17th December 2007

Joe Strummer’s London Calling
BBC 6 Music 21:30-22:00 (Daily)
“Part 1 of 4. The Clash frontman turns DJ in a series of programmes first broadcast on the BBC World Service in 2001.” Did I ever mention I met the man? I was hanging out with Pulp, (as one does), and Candida says, “Have you seen who’s over there? it’s Joe Strummer”. Had a good chat with him and he seemed like a really genuine friendly chap. Sorry about the shameful name-dropping. All true though. Ah, but those were the days my friend. We thought it would never end.

Wednesday 19th December 2007

The Charles Hazlewood Show
BBC Radio 2 22:00-23:00
“Tonights guests include Billy Bragg, Martin Carthy, Eliza Carthy, Sheila Chandra, Sheema Kukhurjee and Afro Celt Soundsystem.”

Thursday 20th December 2007
The Cannabis Trade
BBC Radio 4 20:00-20:30
“Part 1 of 2: With politicians under fire following the declassification of cannabis, Winifred Robinson tracks the drug from the Vietnamese operators illegally growing massive quantities in Britain, to the boarding schools where the heads say it’s destroying young lives. Containing unique access to police raids and unparalleled recordings of Vietnamese operators.” Part 2 is on at the same time next week.

Christmas Eve 2007

Gideon Coe
BBC 6 Music 23:00-01:00
“Gideon Coe presents highlights of this year’s BBC Electric Proms which featured, among others, Sigur Ros.”

Christmas Day 2007

Siouxsie Special
BBC 6 Music 21:00-22:00
“An hour-long special to mark the one-time queen of punk Siouxsie Sioux’s return to the music scene.” Repeated on New Year’s Day

Tony Wilson Tribute
BBC 6 Music 21:00-22:00
“Paul Morley profiles the Factory Records boss and Joy Division manager who died in August.”

Boxing Day 2007

Radio 1 Presents White Stripes
BBC Radio 1 19:00-21:00
“Highlights from the studio session back in June.”

Thursday 27th December 2007

Isle of Wight Festival 2007
Virgin Radio 18:00-22:00
“Highlights from this year’s event.”

The Cannabis Trade
BBC Radio 4 20:00-20:30
“Part 2 of 2: Amid mounting concerns about the effects of cannabis on teenagers, Winifred Robinson examines the supply of the drug among the young.”

Jay-Z: From Brooklyn to the Boardroom
BBC Radio 4 23:30-00:00
“Financial expert Alvin Hall loks at the rags-to-riches story of US rap star who escaped the Brooklyn ghetto to acquire an empire worth $320 million. He looks at how Jay-Z built his personal fortune from scratch and how big-name American brands are now hiring his business savvy to help them too.” Some people may complain about repeats but this is a good time to catch up on those things that were missed earlier in the year like this. I’m not down with the rap kids so I’ve never heard of this guy. I just hope some of that fortune finds it’s way back to the community he left in Brooklyn and to other people who really need it. One can only have so much money before it becomes almost meaningless.

Friday 28th December 2007

Al Bowly – Britain’s First Pop Star
BBC Radio 2 19:00-19:300
“Clare Teal presents a four part series in tribute to South Africa-raised singer Al Bowly.” If the The Pig’s 78s and the Peelenium have whet your appetite for dance music of the 30s and 40s then you should appreciate this.

New Year’s Day 2008

Rick Wakeman and the Mighty Boosh
Planet Rock 18:00-19:00
“Repeat of an interview from a couple of months ago with Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding from the Mighty Boosh”
| booshare – The Mighty Boosh

BBC 6 Music 13:00-16:00
“Including an interview with PJ Harvey.”

Siouxsie Special
BBC 6 Music 21:00-22:00
“An hour-long special to mark the one-time queen of punk Siouxsie Sioux’s return to the music scene.” Repeat broadcast from Christmas Day

The show hosted by Underworld from October 2004 is now available:

    Part One:

Thanks a lot to the impressively named Dick le Grande, who adds…

That song in part 1 that features a
    “very-drunk” Peely is hilarious !
Here’s part 2. Sadly, ‘cos I didn’t use a C120, the last few songs (inc ‘She’s Lost Control’) are missing. If anyone has the full Monty, please….

    Part Two:

Excellent but aren’t going to post it up on your site too so I can link in? Up to you of course but you ought to benefit from the traffic in my opinion. Either way I shall give it a full post in a day or two along with some other links plus if I can be arsed I shall upload the Robert Smith show to compliment Underworld.

Thanks Adam and Monsieur le Grande!
